A Tragic War of Attrition…

attrition-cool-vocabulary-words

One hundred years ago, in the hot summer of 1914, Europe’s great powers lumbered ominously into war against each other. The US joined World War I in 1917.

When the conflict ended in 1918, millions of soldiers and civilians had died, and many more suffered physical and psychological wounds.

World War I is often remembered as a war of attrition (see definition and hear pronunciation below), in which the opposing sides inflicted great losses on each other with little or no gain.

Today, leaders around the world commemorate the war’s start as a tribute to the past but also as a warning for the future: “never again.”

Cool word vocabulary question of the day: What do you think might prevent a war of attrition?
