This Bird Really Jabbers

You might think that flying is a bird’s most remarkable feat.

But the African Grey Parrot is capable of even more.

These beautiful, highly intelligent birds are best known as “talking parrots.”

Believe it or not, some African Gray Parrots can learn more than 1,000 words!

It’s hard to imagine that a bird could jabber (see definition and hear pronunciation below) away at such lengths.

When an audience applauds at the end of a play, concert or some other public performance, you know that the event was a success.

The act of clapping to show praise actually dates back to ancient Roman times.

Loud applause, as opposed to quieter sounds such as finger-snapping, was a way that onlookers demonstrated their appreciation.

If an audience is especially impressed or moved by a performance, there might even be a standing ovation (see definition and hear pronunciation below).

That is the ultimate compliment to a performer!

What’s Up with Gubernatorial Elections?

These days, you can’t pick up a newspaper or turn on the TV without hearing about presidential politics.

But Americans won’t be going to the polls to elect a new president until 2016.

This year, however, there will be “off-year” elections on Tuesday, Nov. 3.

In some areas, candidates will be elected to local positions such as school boards and other municipal posts.

In a few states, such as Mississippi, there will be gubernatorial (see definition and hear pronunciation below) elections this year.

Will You Don a Scary Costume?

Some Halloween costumes are traditional favorites.

Whether you’re headed to a Halloween party or hitting the streets to go trick-or-treating, you’re likely to see lots of witches, ghosts and even puffy, orange outfits that look like pumpkins.

This year, you’ll probably also see plenty of superheroes. Google has announced that the top costumes for 2015 are expected to include Star Wars characters, Batman and Wonder Woman.
