When it’s time to graduate, there’s no better feeling than receiving your diploma!

When schools confer (see definition below) these important pieces of paper at graduation ceremonies, it’s a great time for friends and family members to celebrate the accomplishments of the graduates.

By the time you get your diploma, you will have written lots of papers and put in plenty of late nights studying for exams.

But when you have your diploma in hand, you’ll know that all your effort was worthwhile!

In fact, studies show that high school graduates earn, on average, about $200,000 more over their lifetimes than those who don’t complete high school.

And college graduates? They earn, on average, about $1 million more over their lifetimes than those without a high school diploma. It really does pay to stay in school!

What a Springtime SURFEIT!

If you’ve been sneezing a lot lately, chances are you’re allergic to pollen.

Spring is one of the seasons when grasses and trees, in particular, release those tiny particles in the air in order to fertilize other plants.

But pollen also can end up in your nose or throat, where it causes uncomfortable symptoms, including sneezing, sniffling and coughing.

If you find that you are suffering from this type of allergy, you may want to stay inside early in the morning and around dusk when pollen counts tend to be the highest.

But there’s so much pollen that you can’t avoid it entirely. A single ragweed plant has been estimated to release up to one billion pollen grains.

With such a surfeit (see definition below) of these tiny particles, you’ll never be able to avoid them altogether!

Don’t Get WIZENED!

Most people would agree that it feels great to bask in the sun on warm summer day.

But too much sun can be bad news.

If you’re outside for too long, chances are good that you’ll get sunburned. Over time, excessive sun exposure can cause your skin to even look wizened (see definition below).

That’s why it’s a good idea to wear a hat and sunscreen if you’re outside for an extended period of time.

Even on cloudy days, your skin can be soaking up the rays, and the damaging effects of sun can really add up.

So, play it safe and protect your skin from too much sun!

Are You DIURNAL or Nocturnal?

Sunrise is the start of the day for most humans. Their daily activities begin roughly at daybreak and continue throughout the day. For this reason, humans are said to be diurnal (see definition below).

Nocturnal animals, on the other hand, are active during the night and sleep during the day. Coyotes, foxes and skunks are just a few such animals.

While most humans sleep about seven to eight hours a night, nocturnal animals have a wide range of sleeping patterns during the day. The owl monkey, for example, sleeps up to 17 hours a day, giant armadillos snooze for about 18 hours daily and bats get up to 20 hours of Zzz’s each day.

Now, that’s a good amount of shut-eye!
