
The Industrial Revolution, which began in the 1700s, brought great economic progress to our society.
During this time, small-scale, homemade manufacturing operations were replaced by large machines and equipment operated in factories.
No one knew at the time that the smoke and chemicals released by these factories would defile (see definition and hear pronunciation below) the air and water in our environment.
Fortunately, we now have laws to regulate pollution so that economic progress can continue without threatening the safety of humans and wildlife.
