In April 1939, Marian Anderson gave a concert on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial that would change artistic and social history.
An African-American singer widely lauded in both the US and Europe, she was not allowed at that time to perform inside the segregated Constitution Hall in Washington, DC.
Nevertheless, Anderson’s dulcet (see definition and hear pronunciation below) rendition of “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee” has reverberated throughout history.
As it was stated during her introduction: “Genius draws no color lines.”
