Do You Eye an ISLET?

Everyone knows that a piece of land that is surrounded by water is an island.

Manhattan, perhaps the best-known borough of New York City, is an island. So is Greenland, which is considered the largest island on Earth with an area of about 840,000 square miles.

But what is an islet (see definition and hear pronunciation below)?

This body of land is also surrounded by water but is smaller than an island. There are innumerable islets scattered around the world.

So, the next time you think you see an island, you might want to consider whether it’s actually an islet!
