Everyone knows that a piece of land that is surrounded by water is an island.
Manhattan, perhaps the best-known borough of New York City, is an island. So is Greenland, which is considered the largest island on Earth with an area of about 840,000 square miles.

This body of land is also surrounded by water but is smaller than an island. There are innumerable islets scattered around the world.
