What do you think is most striking about an owl?
Many people would say it’s the bird’s enormous eyes.
Surprisingly, owls don’t move their eyes but instead swivel their necks to view their surroundings.
Most owls are also able to fly without making any sound. This allows them to hunt their prey at night without being heard.
During the day, predators don’t see the owl because its feathers serve as a camouflage. And on a regular basis, the owl molts (see definition and hear pronunciation below) so that new feathers appear.
All these features are what make the owl such a fascinating creature!
Cool word vocabulary question of the day: What purpose do you think it serves for the owl to molt its feathers?
Molt: The shedding of feathers, hair or skin.
