Just as sports teams have mascots, the United States has its own symbol: Uncle Sam.

The name derives from a little-known man named Samuel Wilson, a meat packer from New York.

Wilson fed the US Army with barrels of beef during the War of 1812.

The barrels were stamped “US” to identify them as American supplies, but soldiers quickly nicknamed the beef “Uncle Sam’s.”

Over the next 200 years, the name and image of “Uncle Sam” has become emblematic (see definition and hear pronunciation below) of the United States itself.
