Editor’s note: This month, the Cool Word Club will be defining words related to Halloween.
Happy Halloween!
Today is the day that ghosts, goblins are other scary creatures reign supreme.
In keeping with the spooky nature of this holiday, others may greet you with a forceful “Boo!”
But you can have the last laugh if you simply shrug off such frightful encounters.
After all, “boo” is nothing more than a classic example of onomatopoeia (see definition and hear pronunciation below). Other examples include “hiss,” “meow” and “buzz.”
So, instead of getting scared, just exclaim, “That’s enough of your onomatopoeia!”
Your greeter may well be dumbfounded by your impressive vocabulary and scurry away!
Cool word vocabulary question of the day: What other words can you think of that are examples of onomatopoeia?
Onomatopoeia: Words with sounds that reflect their meanings.
