When an audience applauds at the end of a play, concert or some other public performance, you know that the event was a success.

The act of clapping to show praise actually dates back to ancient Roman times.

Loud applause, as opposed to quieter sounds such as finger-snapping, was a way that onlookers demonstrated their appreciation.

If an audience is especially impressed or moved by a performance, there might even be a standing ovation (see definition and hear pronunciation below).

That is the ultimate compliment to a performer!

Cool word question of the day: When do you think it would be appropriate to give a standing ovation at a performance?

Ovation: An enthusiastic show of public approval, often in the form of prolonged applause.
