In his time, Howard Hughes was one of the wealthiest men in the United States.
He grew up in Texas, inherited his family’s tool manufacturing business and then became captivated by Hollywood. In the 1920s, he began producing successful films.
Around this time, Hughes also developed a love of airplanes. He created an aircraft company that became known for its sophisticated planes.
Sadly, at the height of his fame, Hughes was badly injured in a plane crash.
After that time, he became reclusive (see definition and hear pronunciation below) and withdrew from the public eye for the rest of his life.
If you saw the 2004 film “The Aviator,” that was Howard Hughes who was portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio.
