In the United States when you turn 18 years old, one of the many rights you gain is the right to vote.
But did you know that women in America were proscribed (see definition and hear pronunciation below) from voting and did not gain this right until 1920?
At that time, the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution was ratified allowing women to vote.
Due to the suffrage movement led by many women, including Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, women were finally given an equal voice in American government.
Women, of course, continue to play an important role in our democracy today!
