Hollywood has long been known as a glamorous, glittering place populated by movie stars.
Yet many famous actors come from humble backgrounds. That was the case for Archie Leach. He was born into a troubled family in Bristol, England, but found his calling in the theater.
Once in America, he moved from Broadway shows in New York City to movies in Los Angeles, adopting the name “Cary Grant.”
Over the next several decades, Cary Grant became the ultimate movie star, a debonair (see definition and hear pronunciation below) onscreen personality that moviegoers longed to emulate.
Even though Grant died more than 25 years ago, his movies can still charm an audience!
Cool word vocabulary question of the day: Which actors would you describe as debonair in today’s movies?

The peacock’s dazzling plumage makes it one of the most flamboyantly adorned creatures on earth.
Male peacocks display their resplendent (see definition and hear pronunciation below) feathers, which fan out behind the bird and shimmer with hues of blue, green and bronze.
These gorgeous tail feathers are mostly intended to catch the eye of any prospective female peacocks that might show interest in the male.
They also give the animals an impressive size–peacocks usually have a wingspan measuring up to five feet, which makes them one of the largest flying birds in the world!

As the warm months of summer give way to the crisp days of fall, trees in the Northern Hemisphere begin their annual display of vibrant colors.
Throughout the sunnier months, oaks, maples, birches and other such trees use a compound called chlorophyll for photosynthesis, which converts sunlight into plant fuel.
Chlorophyll gives summer foliage its shimmering green color, but as the weather cools and daylight shrinks, leaves begin to slow their production of the compound and start to reveal the natural pigments in the leaves.
The beautiful autumnal (see definition and hear pronunciation below) hues of red, yellow, orange and brown create quite a feast for the eye!

While most plants need regular watering to grow and survive, the cactus plant does not.
This fascinating plant has adapted to living in dry desert regions, where it receives little rainfall.
The cactus is unique in that it has very long roots that stretch out beneath the desert floor to absorb rainfall.
Because the cactus is one of the few plants that can survive in such an arid (see definition and hear pronunciation below) environment, it does not have much competition for the limited nutrients in the desert.
You might say the cactus is even synonymous with the desert.
