A Survivor in an Inimical Climate

inimical-cool-words

Did you know that the United States is home to the driest and hottest area in North America?

Death Valley, California, is known for its extreme hot temperatures and lack of water.

It is hard to imagine anything living in such a hostile environment.

However, the kangaroo rat is one example of wildlife that survives in this inimical (see definition and hear pronunciation below) climate.

In fact, the kangaroo rat can live virtually its entire life without drinking liquid.

How is this possible? The animal’s body is able to store and get all the liquid it needs merely from the seeds that it eats!

Cool word question of the day: What do you think would be the most effective way to survive in an inimical environment?

Inimical: Not friendly; hostile; harmful; detrimental.

A Latent Volcano’s Enduring Threat…

latent-cool-words

Volcanoes are one of nature’s most fascinating phenomena. When a volcano erupts, it spews lava and ash that can decimate nearby populations.

Among the most devastating is Italy’s Mount Vesuvius, which killed thousand of people when it erupted in 79 AD. Though its last eruption was about 70 years ago, many people believe that it remains a threat to the area.

Meanwhile, Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania is home to a volcano that last erupted more than 360,000 years ago. Despite its lack of recent volcanic activity, it also has the potential to erupt at some point in the future.

These latent (see definition and hear pronunciation below) volcanoes are awe-inspiring in both their scenic beauty and potential to create enormous damage.

Cool word question of the day: Can you think of any other examples of latent phenomena in nature?

Intense physical activity can be especially challenging on a hot summer day.

When you’re working out in the heat, it’s important to drink plenty of water.

If you don’t, your body can quickly lose so much fluid through perspiration that you become dehydrated.

To avoid this, it’s smart to drink water throughout the day and to consume about eight ounces every 15 minutes when you’re exercising.

You may also want to eat some nutritious food, such as peanut butter or a banana, before a strenuous workout.

Getting this sustenance (see definition and hear pronunciation below) will give you the strength you need to exercise to your full capacity.

Cool word question of the day: Can you think of other times when it’s especially important to get sustenance?
