What a Colorful Epaulet!

For people who serve in the military, the uniforms they wear tell a lot about their jobs.

For those who go into combat, the uniform is usually designed in muted colors that blend in with the environment.

When a member of the military wears a formal dress uniform, however, it may display stripes, pins, ribbons or epaulets (see definition and hear pronunciation below) that signify that person’s rank.

Now, epaulets are even used outside the military as fashion elements. You might see them on certain types of clothing, such as pea coats (also known as “pilot jackets”).

Cool word question of the day:
Do you think epaulets are fashionable to wear?

Epaulet: An ornamental shoulder piece, often on a military uniform; a decorative strip on the shoulder of clothing.

What do you look for in a friend?

The answer will depend on the person you ask.

Sometimes, we choose friends who make us laugh.

But long-term friendships usually involve more than that. A close friend is someone who is also honest, trustworthy and loyal.

True friends are genuinely interested in your well being and show empathy (see definition and hear pronunciation below) when you’re coping with a difficult situation.

As the essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson once said: “The only way to have a friend is to be one.”

Cool word question of the day: What are the characteristics that you look for in a close friend?

Sadly, at the height of his fame, Hughes was badly injured in a plane crash.

More than 2,000 miles long, this trail passes through 14 states in the eastern United States.

Even though hikers who set out on the trail definitely have a destination in mind, it is also a magnificent place to simply rove (see definition and hear pronunciation below) and take in the beautiful scenery.
