Nobody likes to make a mistake. But we all make them from time to time.
Whether it’s a relatively minor error such as misspelling a word in a report or a colossal misjudgment such as failing to check for traffic when crossing the street, mistakes can happen for a variety of reasons.
Sometimes, we make mistakes when we’re rushing to complete a task. Other times, we make them because we’re distracted.
Whatever the circumstance, it’s important to recognize when a mistake happens and to take responsibility for it.
That way, you’re less likely to get upbraided (see definition and hear pronunciation below) for an error you may have made. No one enjoys that!
Cool word vocabulary question of the day: What effect does it have if a person is upbraided for making a mistake?
Upbraid: To scold, criticize, reproach severely.

You may think that all turkeys make that familiar “gobble, gobble” sound.
But anytime you hear that telltale call, it will be coming from a male turkey, also known as a “tom” or “gobbler.”
So, what sound does a female turkey, or hen, make? It’s most often described as a gentle clucking sound.
And, in case you’ve ever wondered, that red, fleshy piece that hangs over the turkey’s beak is called a “snood.”
But don’t be deceived by the turkey’s lumbering appearance. These bipedal (see definition and hear pronunciation below) creatures can run at speeds of up to 25 mph!
Cool word vocabulary question of the day: Do you think it’s better for an animal to be bipedal or quadruped?

It’s hard to imagine how a volcanic eruption could bury an entire city. But that’s exactly what happened in the year 79 AD, when Mount Vesuvius devastated the ancient Roman city of Pompeii.
The volcano erupted with such inexorable (see definition and hear pronunciation below) force that volcanic ash surged uncontrollably down the mountain, killing about 2,000 people.
The village was left abandoned until centuries later, when explorers discovered many remarkably well-preserved buildings and skeletons that appeared frozen in time. Now, about two million tourists visit these ancient ruins each year.
Cool word vocabulary question of the day: Can you think of any natural phenomena that have inexorable features?
Inexorable: Unstoppable, unyielding, not to be changed.
