Oh, Those Capricious Winds!

Capricious cool vocabulary wordsWhen sailors venture out into the open waters, they must first unfurl their sails.

On a clear, windswept day, the billowing sails fill easily, and the boat churns through the waves at a faster clip.

When the air is calm and stagnant, the boat may only drift languidly on the surface of the sea.

Because of the wind’s capricious (see definition and hear pronunciation below) nature, a good sailor must continually trim, or reposition, the boat’s mainsail in order to keep up with the wind’s changes.

Only then can the boat really soar!

Cool word vocabulary question of the day: What other elements of nature would you say are capricious?

Capricious: Changing often and quickly; changing suddenly in mood or behavior.

Mother Nature has a reputation for capricious (see definition and hear pronunciation below) behavior!

Whether it’s violent winds, torrential rains or heavy snowfall, extreme weather can quickly devastate an area.

Fortunately, modern technology allows meteorologists to track these unpredictable weather events more easily than ever before.

Hurricanes, for example, are often predicted well in advance, giving people time to evacuate from areas affected by severe storms.

This way, you can sometimes stay one step ahead of Mother Nature!

Cool word vocabulary question of the day: In what way do you think Mother Nature’s behavior is most capricious?
