Mystery writer Agatha Christie is one of the best-selling novelists of all time.

The British author, who lived from 1890 to 1976, created memorable fictional characters such as Hercule Poirot, the mustachioed Belgian detective, and Miss Marple, an elderly lady with an excellent nose for solving crimes.

Known for her carefully crafted plots, Christie had writing habits, however, that were far from methodical. Even though the denouement (see definition and hear pronunciation below) of each of Christie’s mysteries seems to be precisely planned, the author’s methods for tracking her characters’ actions were quite chaotic.

In fact, she often jotted down ideas for crucial plot twists right next to her grocery lists!
