The next time you head to the bathroom to brush your teeth, think about this: If you had lived before the advent of toothpaste and toothbrushes, what would you have done?
You may have simply used your finger to rub a baking soda mixture on your pearly whites. It wasn’t until the late 1800s that toothbrushes and toothpaste became widely available in the US.
Now, you can now buy toothbrushes in a variety of sizes and colors, and dentifrice (see definition and hear pronunciation below) is available in assorted flavors. It also contains fluoride to help fight cavities and prevent gum disease.
Dentists say that everyone should brush their teeth at least twice a day—and for two minutes each time.
This practice not only keeps your teeth shiny white, but also helps prevent halitosis!
Cool word vocabulary question of the day: If your favorite dentifrice weren’t available, what would you use to brush your teeth?
