Music has often been used as an agent of social or political change. Few people have exemplified this more than American folk singer Pete Seeger.
Seeger, who died last month at the age of 94, used music as a peaceful way to rally people together in support of important causes.
In the 1960s, for example, his rearrangement of an old gospel melody “We Shall Overcome” became the anthem for the civil-rights movement. He later became involved in anti-war and environmental causes.
At President Obama’s first inauguration, Seeger sang “This Land Is Your Land” at the Lincoln Memorial. Watch it here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=HE4H0k8TDgw
Seeger’s indefatigable (see definition and hear pronunciation below) spirit made him a symbol for American activism.
Thank you, Pete Seeger!
