Karate is one of the oldest forms of marital arts.

Originating centuries ago on the island of Okinawa, karate evolved as a popular style of fighting that did not require weapons.

These days, karate is practiced mainly as a form of exercise and for self-defense.

A practitioner of karate uses various kicks and punches against his/her opponent.

In response, the opponent will parry (see definition and hear pronunciation below) these strikes.

In karate, a person who reaches the most advanced levels typically wears a black belt.

This is a huge accomplishment!
