People in all professions generally strive to uphold high standards, and many jobs require a high degree of probity (see definition and hear pronunciation below).
For centuries, doctors have taken the Hippocratic Oath, which outlines practices that physicians pledge to uphold.
These include preserving patients’ privacy, treating illness to the best of their ability and passing on scientific knowledge to the next generation of doctors.
The oath, the world’s oldest binding document, has been modernized and is still administered to graduating doctors today.
However, many in the profession believe that the Hippocratic Oath needs to be updated to fit with current science and medical beliefs.
