The Olympic Games are the ultimate in high-stakes competition.

After spending years in training, an athlete’s fate may be determined in just a few minutes of actual competition. And the gold, silver and bronze medals are never easy to win.

Disappointment is rife (see definition and hear pronunciation below) among the athletes who leave the games without earning a medal. Still, it’s important for them to show good sportsmanship and determination even if they aren’t winners.

Not everyone can be a medalist, but every single competitor can uphold the spirit of goodwill and shared achievement.

After all, they’re all Olympians!
