If you had to name an incredibly strong man-made material, concrete might come to mind.

It’s used to construct buildings, bridges and other durable structures.

Many people think that concrete and cement are the same material, but that’s not true.

Cement is used, along with water and aggregate (sand, rock or gravel), to make concrete.

When mixed together, the materials create a pasty substance that is poured and then tamped (see definition and hear pronunciation below) into place to harden.

Within hours, concrete is usually strong enough to be walked on. But it takes several days before it is ready for heavy use!
