It’s no coincidence that Vermont has been nicknamed the “Green Mountain” state.
With its Green Mountain National Forest, the state offers a spectacular display of verdant (see definition and hear pronunciation below) trees and rugged mountains.
So, how did the state get its name? No one knows for sure, but most people believe that it was early French settlers who dubbed it Vermont.
Combine the French words “vert” and “mont,” and it means green mountain!
