What a Toothsome Treat!

toothsome-cool-words-vocabulary

Do you love chocolate? Without question, it’s one of the most popular flavors for desserts.

Most people, however, know little about the rich history of this toothsome (see definition and hear pronunciation below) treat.

When cacao beans, the source of chocolate, originated around 1000 B.C. in Central and South America, chocolate was consumed only in drinks.

In fact, solid chocolate didn’t exist until the 1850s!

Of course, this delicious dessert is now widely available, although rare varieties still exist.

Believe it or not, one of the world’s most expensive chocolate treats, made by Knipschildt Chocolatier, costs $2,600 per pound!

Cool word vocabulary question of the day: Do you agree that chocolate is a toothsome treat, or do you prefer another dessert?

Toothsome: Tasty or delicious.

The Power of Probity…

probity-cool-words

People in all professions generally strive to uphold high standards, and many jobs require a high degree of probity (see definition and hear pronunciation below).

For centuries, doctors have taken the Hippocratic Oath, which outlines practices that physicians pledge to uphold.

These include preserving patients’ privacy, treating illness to the best of their ability and passing on scientific knowledge to the next generation of doctors.

The oath, the world’s oldest binding document, has been modernized and is still administered to graduating doctors today.

However, many in the profession believe that the Hippocratic Oath needs to be updated to fit with current science and medical beliefs.

Bedashed With Rain!

bedashed-cool-vocabulary-words

Think, for a minute, what it’s like on a rainy day.

The sky is full of thick, gray clouds, and everything from sidewalks to upturned umbrellas is bedashed (see definition and hear pronunciation below) with rain.

It’s an ordinary occurrence, but the formation of those raindrops is pretty extraordinary.

It actually takes millions of cloud droplets to produce a single raindrop.

We typically think of raindrops as tear-shaped, but most small raindrops are spherical, with a radius of less than 1 millimeter.

Malingering Soldiers?

malinger-cool-words

When the World War I broke out in 1914, the psychological effects of war were still deeply misunderstood.

Soldiers who suffered from trauma were often wrongly dismissed as malingerers (see definition and hear pronunciation below) who lacked courage and patriotism.

However, some conditions that affected soldiers were starting to be recognized and treated. One was known as “shell shock,” a type of mental injury then believed to result from repeated exposure to explosives on the battlefield.

Gradually, the idea of combat fatigue and stress became more widely acknowledged.

Today, soldiers who experience lasting psychological scars are said to suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a condition that is officially recognized and treated.

Cool word vocabulary question of the day: We’ve come a long way since the days when soldiers with trauma were thought to be malingering. But do you think there are still improvements that can be made in the way that veterans are treated?

Malinger: To exaggerate or feign illness in order to avoid duty or work.
