Don’t Get Flummoxed!

flummox-cool-vocabulary-words

Are you a good test-taker?

When it comes to taking tests, many people prefer multiple-choice questions.

Even though it may appear that these tests are easier than those with open-ended questions, that’s not always the case.

Many people become flummoxed (see definition and hear pronunciation below) when they see more than one answer that has some degree of truth.

The challenge is to find the best answer—the one that is the most correct.

If you’re still not sure, it often helps to re-read the question.

Often, there’s a clue that will point you in the right direction!

Cool word question of the day: What do you think are the best ways to avoid becoming flummoxed when taking a test?

Flummox: To confuse; perplex; bewilder.

Can you imagine what it must feel like to hold a bar of solid gold?

Gold was once used primarily as a form of currency. Now, many people invest in gold or use it in jewelry.

When gold is held by a bank or traded internationally, it often comes in a standardized gold bar. These bars are weighed in what is known as troy ounces.

Gold bars commonly weigh 400 troy ounces each, which equals about 27 pounds.

According to recent values, a gold bar of this size is worth about $500,000.

That’s quite an auric (see definition and hear pronunciation below) treasure!

Time for Some Tamping!

tamp-vocabulary-cool-words

If you had to name an incredibly strong man-made material, concrete might come to mind.

It’s used to construct buildings, bridges and other durable structures.

Many people think that concrete and cement are the same material, but that’s not true.

Cement is used, along with water and aggregate (sand, rock or gravel), to make concrete.

When mixed together, the materials create a pasty substance that is poured and then tamped (see definition and hear pronunciation below) into place to harden.

Within hours, concrete is usually strong enough to be walked on. But it takes several days before it is ready for heavy use!

Cool word question of the day: Do you think there should be more or less concrete used in cities today?

Tamp: To press down by patting or packing; to reduce or lessen.

What a Historic Knell!

knell-cool-vocabulary-words

The Liberty Bell is one of the most famous relics of American history.

Located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the bell was created in London and shipped to its destination in 1752.

The bell’s booming knell (see definition and hear pronunciation below) was used to announce meetings at the State House.

On July 8, 1776, the bell is perhaps one of many that rang that day to alert citizens of the reading of the Declaration of Independence.

It was in the 1830s, however, that the bell came to symbolize the anti-slavery movement and was named the Liberty Bell.

Now, it is considered one of the country’s most important historic symbols!

Cool word question of the day: Do you think that a knell could to used to summon today’s citizens to a public place?
