hew-cool-vocabulary-words

Lots of people go to gyms or health clubs to stay in shape.

They might work out on exercise machines, such as treadmills, or take a spin class.

These activities not only help keep your heart strong but also burn calories.

But guess what: You can also burn calories by staying active around your home.

Taking care of your yard and doing household chores are great ways to work up a sweat.

If you’re really ambitious, you can even hew (see definition and hear pronunciation below) some wood.

For a 150-pound person, chopping wood burns nearly 300 calories an hour!

Wow! What Effulgent Beauty…

effulgent-cool-vocabulary-wordsWhen you peer at the nighttime sky, do you see stars?

If you live in a big city, chances are you won’t see many.

That’s because all the lights that are used in urban areas interfere with our ability to see stars at night.

If you want to see nighttime stars, the best place to be is somewhere far away from the bright city lights.

With a dark sky, you’ll have a much better chance of observing the effulgent (see definition and hear pronunciation below) beauty of our galaxy.

Cool word vocabulary question of the day: What other natural phenomena would you describe as having effulgent beauty?

Is That Extant Album Worth Big Bucks?

extant-cool-vocabulary-words

If you enjoy listening to music, there are plenty of ways to hear the songs you like.

These days, however, hardly anyone plays their favorite tunes on record players.

Some vinyl records that were popular decades ago have even become collectors’ items.

If you happen to own one that is rare, this extant (see definition and hear pronunciation below) record could sell for much more than its original value.

In some cases, it might even be worth hundreds of dollars or more!

Cool word vocabulary question of the day: Can you think of other extant items that might be considered collectors’ items?

Extant: Still existing; not destroyed or lost.

Watch Out for Odorous Bugs!

odorous-cool-vocabulary-words

It can be frightening to spot a bug inside your home.

But what if that bug also smells really bad?

The stink bug is an oval-shaped insect that releases an unpleasant odor when it’s threatened.

Usually less than an inch long, this odorous (see definition and hear pronunciation below) pest can also cause significant damage to plants.

If you ever spot a stink bug, you may want to think twice before squashing it. You can usually avoid the bug’s smelly defense by scooping it up with a plastic bag and releasing it outside!
