You may think of ice cream as a modern-day treat.

But the idea of a flavored ice dessert goes back to antiquity. The famous conqueror Alexander the Great was known to enjoy snow sweetened with honey or fruit.

In 16th-century Europe, explorer Marco Polo brought back a recipe for an ice-cream-like substance from Asia.

Even American presidents George Washington and Thomas Jefferson appear to have been connoisseurs of ice cream.

There’s no question that this delectable (see definition and hear pronunciation below) treat has quite a history!
