Capturing a moving image on film is so easy these days that we sometimes take for granted what an achievement it really is.
It was March 19, 1895, when two French brothers named Auguste and Louis Lumière, who are widely considered to be among the first filmmakers, recorded their first-ever film.
Their invention, a 16-pound camera called the cinematographe, was used to make the film.
Today, the footage looks quite ordinary, depicting the quotidian (see definition and hear pronunciation below) routine of factory workers leaving work at the end of the day.
Still, it must have been thrilling to see people move on a screen for the first time!
