Beware of Intermittent Showers!

intermittent-cool-vocabulary-words

Summer is a perfect time to travel to a sunny beach!

Whether you’re going on a family vacation or just getting together with friends, it’s a great place to hang out.

On the East Coast, the beaches of Ocean City, New Jersey, are popular for sunning and walking the Boardwalk.

If you hear someone say, “It’s a good beach day,” then you know the weather forecast is probably sunny and hot.

Beware, however, of those forecasts that call for intermittent (see definition and hear pronunciation below) showers. This means that rain could fall on and off for the entire day.

Then you’ll never know when the rain will strike or how long it will last!

Cool word vocabulary question of the day: Can you think of any other weather events that are intermittent?

Intermittent: Periodic; on and off; stopping and starting at intervals.

Oh, Those Capricious Winds!

Capricious cool vocabulary wordsWhen sailors venture out into the open waters, they must first unfurl their sails.

On a clear, windswept day, the billowing sails fill easily, and the boat churns through the waves at a faster clip.

When the air is calm and stagnant, the boat may only drift languidly on the surface of the sea.

Because of the wind’s capricious (see definition and hear pronunciation below) nature, a good sailor must continually trim, or reposition, the boat’s mainsail in order to keep up with the wind’s changes.

Only then can the boat really soar!

Cool word vocabulary question of the day: What other elements of nature would you say are capricious?

Capricious: Changing often and quickly; changing suddenly in mood or behavior.

One Man’s Emblematic Story…

emblematic cool vocabulary words

Just as sports teams have mascots, the United States has its own symbol: Uncle Sam.

The name derives from a little-known man named Samuel Wilson, a meat packer from New York.

Wilson fed the US Army with barrels of beef during the War of 1812.

The barrels were stamped “US” to identify them as American supplies, but soldiers quickly nicknamed the beef “Uncle Sam’s.”

Over the next 200 years, the name and image of “Uncle Sam” has become emblematic (see definition and hear pronunciation below) of the United States itself.

Cool word vocabulary question of the day: Can you think of any other famous “mascots” that are emblematic of a certain team or organization?

Emblematic: Serving as a symbol of a particular quality or concept; symbolic.
