Incontrovertible Evidence of a King!

incontrovertible-cool-vocabulary-words

King Richard III of England may have died in battle back in 1485, but his story, famously portrayed by Shakespeare in his play Richard III, has made headlines in recent years.

In 2012, the king’s long-lost bones were found beneath the site of a parking lot in Leicester, England.

Researchers conducted DNA tests and produced incontrovertible (see definition and hear pronunciation below) evidence that the bones that had been discovered did belong to Richard.

After more than 500 years, one of British history’s most enduring mysteries was finally solved!

Cool word vocabulary question of the day: Can you think of any other mysteries in history, books or movies that were eventually solved with incontrovertible facts?

Incontrovertible: Not able to be denied; indisputable.

Much Better Than Lucre!

lucre-cool-words

When archaeologist Howard Carter descended a flight of steps in the middle of Egypt’s Valley of the Kings, he knew they led to something exciting.

It was November 1922, and Carter had just discovered the tomb of the young pharaoh Tutankhamun, who had died nearly 3,000 years earlier.

Carter and his team of excavators were amazed by the lavish splendor of the tomb, which included more than 100 gold items buried inside the mummy’s coffin and many other archaeological treasures.

Unlike robbers who had previously entered the chamber looking for lucre (see definition and hear pronunciation below), Carter led the expedition for historical purposes.

His team was the first to carefully document the items found in the tomb–a process that took 10 years!

Cool word vocabulary question of the day: Can you think of any other valuable historical items that could be claimed by thieves as lucre? Why do you think it’s important to prevent this from happening?

Lucre: Money, especially that obtained in a dishonorable manner.

A Succulent Summer Treat…

succulent-cool-words

It’s often hard to believe that some of the tastiest foods can also be among the healthiest.

Take those delicious slices of watermelon we slurp up as a treat on hot summer days.

They might seem like nothing more than a succulent (see definition and hear pronunciation below) burst of refreshment, but watermelon is actually chockfull of healthful properties.

The fruit, which originated in Southern Africa, contains lots of important nutrients, including potassium, vitamin C and lycopene.

There’s also an excellent reason for eating it when the weather is hot–watermelon is a great source of water, so it quite literally cools you off!
