If a friend tells you, “It’s raining buckets outside,” you know the person doesn’t mean it literally. We all exaggerate our words at times for dramatic effect.
Even Shakespeare used hyperbole (see definition and hear pronunciation below) frequently throughout his plays. One example is when the lovesick Romeo compares Juliet to the sun, as a way to describe the enormity of his feelings for her.
But this type of exaggeration is most common in our everyday speech, whether we’re carrying a heavy package that “weighs a ton” or we hear a joke that’s so funny we’re simply “dying of laughter.”
These phrases make the point, even though they’re not really accurate!
Cool word vocabulary question of the day: When was the last time you used hyperbole, and how did you do it?
Hyperbole: Obvious and intentional exaggeration.

Capturing a moving image on film is so easy these days that we sometimes take for granted what an achievement it really is.
It was March 19, 1895, when two French brothers named Auguste and Louis Lumière, who are widely considered to be among the first filmmakers, recorded their first-ever film.
Their invention, a 16-pound camera called the cinematographe, was used to make the film.
Today, the footage looks quite ordinary, depicting the quotidian (see definition and hear pronunciation below) routine of factory workers leaving work at the end of the day.
Still, it must have been thrilling to see people move on a screen for the first time!
Cool word vocabulary question of the day: What’s an example of a quotidian moment in your life that you might use technology to record?
Quotidian: Ordinary, commonplace, occurring daily.

When we go shopping for new clothes, we’re likely to hit the local mall. But if you wanted a piece of clothing made especially for you, it can’t be found in a shopping mall.
For hundreds of years, tailors have cut cloth and measured it to fit exactly to the wearer’s body, a tradition that has become increasingly replaced by faster production methods.
Still, the pinnacle of bespoke (see definition and hear pronunciation below) clothing remains in London, on Savile Row.
If you want a tailor to make your clothes, however, just be prepared to spend a lot of money.
A men’s suit can easily cost a couple thousand dollars. And a women’s designer gown can cost even more!
Cool word vocabulary question of the day: What do you think is the benefit of having bespoke clothing?
Bespoke: Custom-made.

Mystery writer Agatha Christie is one of the best-selling novelists of all time.
The British author, who lived from 1890 to 1976, created memorable fictional characters such as Hercule Poirot, the mustachioed Belgian detective, and Miss Marple, an elderly lady with an excellent nose for solving crimes.
Known for her carefully crafted plots, Christie had writing habits, however, that were far from methodical. Even though the denouement (see definition and hear pronunciation below) of each of Christie’s mysteries seems to be precisely planned, the author’s methods for tracking her characters’ actions were quite chaotic.
In fact, she often jotted down ideas for crucial plot twists right next to her grocery lists!
Cool word vocabulary question of the day: What’s the most exciting denouement of a book or movie that you’ve come across?
Denouement: The resolution of the plot within a literary work such as a book or play.
