contusion-cool-words-voabulary

Basketball is one of the most exciting sports there is—whether you’re watching it or playing it.

It’s also one of the most dangerous sports for both boys and girls.

Sprained ankles are among the most common injuries that occur on basketball courts.

A significant number of players are also affected by contusions (see definition and hear pronunciation below) or fractures at some point in their playing careers.

That’s why it’s always smart to think of safety before stepping onto the court!

Cool word question of the day: What are some of the best ways to stay safe while playing basketball?

Manifold Sounds Make Beautiful Music!

manifold-cool-vocabulary-words

If you like classical music, then you probably enjoy the magnificent sounds of an orchestra.

Orchestras first came into being way back in the 18th century. Over the years, they have grown in size. Most contemporary orchestras have 40 to 100 or more instruments.

Orchestras have four main sections: The string section has such instruments as cellos and violins; the woodwind section includes flutes and oboes; the brass section has horns and trumpets; and the percussion section includes drums and cymbals. A piano is also often played in an orchestra.

The conductor, of course, coordinates the manifold (see definition and hear pronunciation below) instruments so that the end result is beautiful music!

Cool word question of the day: If you were a conductor, how would you coordinate the manifold instruments?

Manifold: Numerous and varied; using similar devices at the same time.

Why It Pays to Be a Polyglot…

polyglot-cool-vocabulary-words

Traveling to a foreign country can be lots of fun—especially if you speak the language that is used there.

In surveys, about 20% of Americans describe themselves as bilingual compared with 56% of Europeans.

Now, researchers are discovering even more advantages to being a polyglot (see definition and hear pronunciation below).

Speaking more than one language seems to strengthen the brain’s problem-solving abilities.

So, if you’re looking for a way to boost your brainpower, you might think about learning another language.

Cool word question of the day: What do you think would be some of the biggest advantages of being a polyglot?

Would you like to know what will happen in the future?

Some people believe that it’s possible by peering into a crystal ball.

These individuals say that a practice known as crystal-gazing allows them to see images that help them foretell future events.

Of course, there’s no scientific evidence showing that anyone has the ability to predict what the future will bring.

People who claim to be clairvoyant (see definition and hear pronunciation below) are usually part of stage acts that are meant for entertainment.

So, a crystal ball can be a beautiful object, but it won’t tell you what will happen in the years to come!

Cool word question of the day: Do you think it would be a gift or a burden to be clairvoyant?

Clairvoyant: The ability to see into the future or have knowledge of things not present to the senses.
