High Above the Undulating Waves!

Wow! Can you imagine what it would be like to ride a wave that’s nearly 80 feet high?

That’s the approximate height of the massive waves that surfers navigate when they set world records.

These waves are nothing like the gentle, undulating (see definition and hear pronunciation below) waves we ordinarily see at a beach.

These towering walls of water are about the height of an eight-story building!

What’s in Store for this Palimpsest?

Buildings can carry centuries of secrets and history within their foundations and walls.

Hagia Sophia, the architectural marvel that still stands in Istanbul, Turkey, is one such palimpsest (see definition and hear pronunciation below).

Originally built as a church, it was turned into an Islamic mosque in 1453.

Nearly 500 years later, Hagia Sophia was transformed into a museum.

Now, certain factions of the Turkish government are considering whether it should become a mosque again.

Only the future will tell what’s in store for this building.

The History of a Delectable Treat…

You may think of ice cream as a modern-day treat.

But the idea of a flavored ice dessert goes back to antiquity. The famous conqueror Alexander the Great was known to enjoy snow sweetened with honey or fruit.

In 16th-century Europe, explorer Marco Polo brought back a recipe for an ice-cream-like substance from Asia.

Even American presidents George Washington and Thomas Jefferson appear to have been connoisseurs of ice cream.
