Please, Don’t Defile the Environment!

defile-cool-words

The Industrial Revolution, which began in the 1700s, brought great economic progress to our society.

During this time, small-scale, homemade manufacturing operations were replaced by large machines and equipment operated in factories.

No one knew at the time that the smoke and chemicals released by these factories would defile (see definition and hear pronunciation below) the air and water in our environment.

Fortunately, we now have laws to regulate pollution so that economic progress can continue without threatening the safety of humans and wildlife.

Cool word vocabulary question of the day: Do you know of any modern manufacturing processes that defile the environment?

Defile: To pollute, make dirty, taint or spoil.

Oh, What a Wistful Feeling!

wistful-cool-words

If you pass by a playground, you may recall carefree times when you were a young child.

You may even experience a wistful (see definition and hear pronunciation below) feeling as you acknowledge that those days are now gone.

Interestingly, even though we may recall parts of our childhood years, few adults can remember events that occurred earlier than age 3 or 4, according to psychological studies.

So, if you try to recall the first time you crawled or learned to walk, chances are those memories will elude you.

What is your first memory?

Cool word vocabulary question of the day: What memories make you feel particularly wistful?
